On September 9, 2006, Signature Theatre Company partnered with the River to River Festival to present "August Wilson and The Blues," an evening of words and music paying tribute to August Wilson.
Battery Park's Castle Clinton was alive with poetry and music and the downtown skyline provided a dramatic backdrop for this free outdoor event conceived and directed by longtime Wilson collaborator Ruben Santiago-Hudson. The evening highlighted the influence of the blues on Mr. Wilson and his plays and featured excerpts from his famed ten-play cycle chronicling the African-American experience in the 20th century. The standing room only event featured performances by Paul Butler, Rosalyn Coleman, Keith Randolph Smith and Ruben Santiago-Hudson and show - stopping musical performances by Ebony Jo-Ann, James "Blood" Ulmer, Vernon Reid, and Bill Sims, Jr.
To add even more flavor to an already exciting event, Blue Smoke BBQ offered selections from its menu to the hungry crowd.
