Handyman

Signature Theatre, one of New York's leading off-Broadway theatres, is seeking a Part-time Handyman to join the Facilities Department.

Reporting to the Facilities Manager this position is responsible for upkeep and maintenance tasks for the interior and exterior of the building. These tasks include trade skills, repairs and maintenance work.

Responsibilities include:

  • Perform basic tasks including cleaning and preparation for painting, plastering, lighting and maintenance repairs
  • Repair and install plumbing, electrical, carpentry, flooring, kitchen, bath remodeling, drywall, and locks
  • Perform repairs on building machinery, equipment or appliances, including water coolers, refrigerators, dishwashers, ice machines, microwaves and coffee makers
  • Provide Facilities Management with support and guidance on maintaining their equipment Identify and report the need for major maintenance repairs
  • Undertake duties as assigned or emergency tasks (e.g. leaks, shoveling snow)
  • Maintain inventory and organize Facilities storage areas
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs


Qualifications and requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent qualification required
  • 3 years’ work experience in a similar role
  • Ability to work with hardware tools and power equipment
  • Basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems
  • Organized with good communication and mathematical skills
  • Detail-orientated with an aptitude for problem-solving
  • Must be available to work weekends

Lead Carpenter

Signature Theatre, one of New York's leading off-Broadway theatres, is seeking a Lead Carpenter for its upcoming production of The Hot Wing King.

Reporting to the Technical Director, this position is responsible for leading a crew of 2-6 carpenters for the duration of load in, tech, previews and other calls as needed. This position is paid hourly at a rate of $29, with any overtime paid at time and a half.

Typical hours are Monday – Friday, 9:00am-6:00pm or 8:00am-5:00pm, with occasional evening and weekend work depending on the needs of the production. Load in begins on 1/20/20, tech begins on 2/4/20, previews begin on 2/11 and the show opens 3/1/20. Work calls are confirmed from 1/20 until 2/14, after that notes will be scheduled if needed until opening.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading a crew of 2-6 carpenters for all calls scheduled, to ensure the successful installation and functionality of all scenery for the production
  • Maintaining a SAFE and clean working environment
  • Collaborating with the Technical Director to establish priorities, set order of operations, and communicate any new developments throughout the install and notes process
  • Coordinating needs with leads of other departments (LX, sound, props, costumes) to ensure a successfully collaborative process – i.e. scheduling use of genie, shared tools, access to the stage, etc.
  • Supervising the crew in the proper use and storage of all hand and power tools and reporting any necessary maintenance to the Technical Director
  • Participate in at least one shop visit and meet with the Technical Director for one prep session before install begins (approx. 2 days paid work, flexible scheduling)


Qualifications and requirements:

  • 2+ years of experience leading scenic load ins and managing a carpentry crew of at least 5 people
  • Thorough understanding of and experience with standard scenery construction and installation techniques
  • Thorough understanding of and experience with theatrical rigging
  • Proficient in the use of bench and hand held power tools
  • Experience with metalworking and welding (MIG) a plus
  • The ability to work calmly under pressure in a fast-paced environment, and communicate professionally with both technicians and creatives
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Basic understanding of plumbing is a plus – there will be a functioning sink and hose in this show

These are on-going, hourly wage positions. Candidates should have a well-rounded production background, in addition to the necessary skills and experience in the fields of which they are applying.
