In the Blood are two modern day remixes of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s classic novel
The Scarlet Letter. Fucking A follows the story of Hester Smith, a revered and reviled local abortionist.
In the Blood tells the story of Hester LaNegrita, a penniless mother of five. Both plays are written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Suzan-Lori Parks.
ARE THE RED LETTER PLAYS TWO PARTS OF ONE PLAY OR TWO SEPARATE PLAYS?
The Red Letter Plays: Fucking A & In the Blood are two distinct full-length plays. Although both plays are remixes of the same source material, each production has a distinct story line, a different cast and director, and will be performed in a different theatre.
Why are you producing both plays at once?
Both plays feature the hallmarks of Suzan-Lori’s tremendous writing, and when viewed as companion pieces, Fucking A and In the Blood tell powerful stories of parenthood, class, and systemic injustice. They are, at their core, plays about family and the struggle to survive. Producing The Red Letter Plays in tandem for the first time felt like a natural extension of Signature’s mission to explore a writer’s body of work.

Do I have to buy tickets to both shows?
You can buy tickets to one or both shows. We encourage you to buy tickets to both Fucking A & In the Blood to see these works in conversation with each other.
Do I need to see the shows in a specific order?
See the plays in any order you choose. Fucking A performances take place August 22 - October 1, 2017 in The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre. In the Blood performances take place August 29 - October 8, 2017 in The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre.
Is it possible to see both shows on the same day?
Although these two productions have different run dates and take place in different theatres at The Pershing Square Signature Center, it is possible to see both shows on the same day. If you'd like to see both shows on the same day, book a ticket to the matinee of one show and the evening performance of the other show on the following dates*:
